Aglaonema im Detail
ORIGIN
Aglaonema, also known as "spider-foot" or "Chinese evergreen", is a genus of plants native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, particularly in countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. These plants typically grow in shady, moist forest areas and along river banks.
CARE
Light:
Aglaonema plants prefer bright, indirect light, but can thrive in lower light. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the leaves. This adaptability makes them ideal for indoor spaces with changing light conditions.
Temperature and humidity:
Aglaonema plants love warm temperatures between 18°C and 27°C and thrive in high humidity. However, they are also adaptable to average indoor humidity. If the air is very dry, occasional misting of the leaves can be beneficial.
Irrigation:
The soil should be kept evenly moist, but waterlogging must be avoided. It is advisable to allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Watering should be reduced during the winter months.
Floor:
A well-drained, loose potting substrate is ideal. A mixture of potting soil with perlite or sand ensures good drainage and aeration of the roots.
Fertilization:
During the growing season in spring and summer, a balanced liquid fertilizer can be applied every 4-6 weeks. Fertilization is less necessary in autumn and winter.
Growth type
Aglaonema plants are evergreen, perennial plants with a bushy growth habit. They have strong, fleshy stems and large, elliptical to lanceolate leaves. The leaves are often colorful and can be green, silvery, white, pink or red patterned. Aglaonema plants usually reach a height of about 30 to 90 cm, depending on the species and growing conditions.
More information
Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years to give the plant fresh soil and encourage root growth. Spring is the best time for repotting.
Pest control: Aglaonema can be susceptible to pests such as spider mites, aphids and mealybugs. Regular inspection and, if necessary, treatment with a suitable insecticide or natural remedies such as neem oil is recommended.
Toxicity: Aglaonema plants can be toxic to pets and humans if parts of the plant are ingested. It is advisable to keep them out of the reach of children and pets.
Aglaonema plants are a popular choice for houseplant lovers due to their adaptability, low-maintenance nature and attractive foliage. With proper care, they can remain healthy and decorative for many years.
