Creating your terrarium
Cleaning your glass terrarium
Make sure your terrarium is really clean so that no bacteria remain that could harm your plant terrarium.
The foundation of your ecosystem
A terrarium is a small world in your home or office, so a good foundation is important. First add a thin layer of potting soil, place the pebbles on top and then finish with the activated carbon.
Adding potting soil
Then add the rest of the potting soil to the terrarium and spread it over the surface. This layering will ensure proper and natural water drainage and a good base for the plant roots to take root later.
Placement of moss and small plants
Place the moss on the ground around your terrarium, leaving room for the plants. Carefully remove the small plants from the pot and place them in the potting soil. If the root ball of the plant is a little dry, give it some extra water before placing it in your terrarium.
Decorating your terrarium
Give your terrarium a nice finish with some extra moss and maybe some of your own rocks or terrarium accessories.
Caring for your terrarium
Light
The right light is crucial for the health of your terrarium and plants. It's important that the plants don't get too little light, which can cause mold, or too much light, which can burn the plants. So place your terrarium near a window, but avoid direct sunlight, and rotate it a quarter turn every two weeks to ensure even light distribution.
Water
A closed terrarium creates a humid climate that the plants use to keep themselves alive. The plants release water in the form of steam, this steam partially condenses and causes water droplets on the inside of the glass. These droplets then moisten the soil and provide a humid environment in which the plants thrive. Still too dry? No problem. Even a closed terrarium can use some extra moisture every six months. If the soil feels dry, you can add 5 to 10 cl of water, depending on the size of your terrarium.
TIP: When your moss is no longer green, take it out of the pot and place it in (filtered) water, then squeeze it and put it back in your terrarium.
condensation
Sometimes there is too much condensation and the plants are barely visible. In this case, you can open your terrarium for 10 to 15 minutes to let the excess moisture evaporate. Does the condensation keep coming back? Then move the terrarium to a different location.
temperature
Our terrariums are for indoor use only and the best temperature is between 15 - 25°C (59 - 77°F).
lifespan
Under the right conditions, plants in the terrarium can sustain themselves for years.
